A Soft Hazy Space To Live In

I was drawn to all the wrong things:
I liked to drink, I was lazy,
I didn't have a god,
politics, ideas, ideals.
I was settled into nothingness;
a kind of non-being, and I accepted it.
I didn't make for an interesting person.
I didn't want to be interesting,
it was too hard.
What I really wanted was only
a soft, hazy space to live in,
and to be left alone.

Cosmic Zoom

After sleeping through a hundred million centuries we have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet, sparkling with color, bountiful with life. Within decades we must close our eyes again.
Isn’t it a noble, an enlightened way
of spending our brief time in the sun,
to work at understanding the universe and how we have come to wake up
in it?
This is how I answer when I am asked—as I am surprisingly often—why I bother to get up in the mornings.
--Richard Dawkins
